PEORIA --Three people died in a four-vehicle collision on State Route 74 near Lake Pleasant Road Tuesday evening.

Road closed to clean up 'human parts'

Just prior to the collision, a white passenger van carrying eight people was being followed by a gold car with four people on eastbound SR 74. The Department of Public Safety says the occupants from both vehicles were related.

The gold car passed the van in a no-passing zone, striking a commercial vehicle traveling westbound head-on, according to DPS. The commercial vehicle was being followed by a box truck.

The three who died in the collision were passengers in the gold car. DPS says they had been ejected from the vehicle.

The collision was described by officers on the scene as one of the most gruesome they have ever worked. The road had to be closed to clean up scattered body parts that presented a bio-hazard to other drivers.

It is believed all three passengers of the gold car were wearing safety restraints; however, DPS says it would not have prevented their deaths due to the severity of the collision.

The van and box truck received minor damage and all occupants were uninjured. The driver of the commercial vehicle was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the gold car, who was wearing his seat belt, was transported via air to John C. Lincoln North and is expected to survive.

The deceased are believed to be from Uzbekistan. The driver of the gold car is believed to be from Arizona.
