The following is a media alert from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
DPS on scene of a serious injury collision and hazmat incident
Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers are on the scene of a serious injury collision involving an SUV and a commercial tractor trailer on eastbound Interstate 40 at milepost 223. DPS responded to this collision at about 8:14 a.m. and eastbound lanes were initially closed. At about 10:00 a.m. one eastbound lane was reopened. We expect eastbound traffic to be restricted to one lane for at least two hours for the investigation. Westbound traffic has not been restricted. Traffic is backed up in the area due to the closure and ADOT is on scene assisting with the closure and traffic control.
The driver and two passengers of the SUV have been transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the commercial vehicle was also transported for treatment but was not seriously injured.
Preliminary information: A Black Ford Explorer SUV was traveling westbound on I-40 near milepost 223 when for an unknown reason the driver lost control, traveling through the median into the eastbound lanes when the SUV collided with one of the trailers the semi-truck was pulling. The semi-truck was in the right lane and had moved over to the right and onto the emergency lane when the collision occurred.
DPS Investigators are still trying to determine why the driver of the SUV lost control of the vehicle. DPS Investigators have not determined if impairment was or was not a factor in this collision. Enforcement action has not yet been determined at this stage of the investigation.
