PHOENIX -- A fatal wreck closed Seventh Avenue in both directions for much of the morning at Buckeye Road Wednesday.
It happened at about 3:30 a.m., and involved a semi and a minivan.
The minivan was traveling south on 7th Avenue when for unknown reasons it veered into the northbound lane of traffic and struck the commercial hauler head-on.
Rescue crews worked to extricate Jose Miranda, 18, the driver of that minivan, but by the time they got him out of the vehicle, it was too late. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The semi driver Thomas Johnson, 34, was not injured.
Investigators were on the scene for several hours as they tried to figure out exacly what happened leading up to the wreck.
Officers James Holmes of the Phoenix Police Department said Seventh Avenue between Interstate 17 and Buckeye Road was closed for most of the morning rush hour.
