Haz-mat situation at police HQ due to suspicious packagePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - A man found a container of suspicious substance (white powder) at his realty office at 19th Street and Camelback.
He found it just after 5 p.m. on Thursday and took the substance by car to police headquarters at 620 W. Washington in downtown Phoenix.
This forced police and Phoenix Fire to launch a full-scale Haz-mat investigation.Phoenix Fire declared the area safe and the substance posed no threat. It is still unknown exactly what the substance was.
Phoenix police and Fire shut down Washington between 5th and 7 th Avenues for over an hour and kept employees and officers in the multi-story headquarters away from the area being investigated.
Even though the substance was not hazardous, police and fire crews did not take any chances treating the situation as a hazardous threat.
It is still not clear why the substance was sent to the East Phoenix man's realty office.
