It happened just before 4 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near Seventh Avenue.

According to the Department of Public Safety, the driver of a pickup truck lost control for an unknown reason. The truck spun sideways and collided with a concrete barrier.

The driver, Xavier Celis Martin, 32, of Peoria, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He then was hit by another pickup truck driven by Ammon J. Eubanks, 29, of Buckeye.

Eubanks called DPS right away and remained on scene for the investigation.

A witness described what happened to 3TV.

"As I came up to the accident, I could not see what had happened," said Kerry Miler. "I came to a stop and I found that the gentleman was ejected and then struck by another vehicle and dragged about 125 yards, almost to the beginning of the tunnel."

Miler said he tried to help Martin.

"The gentleman had a pulse. And I tried to clear his airway and things like that," Miler said. "He was unconscious, but I was talking to him, letting him know I was there to help to him. That's when he expired."

While it was raining at the time of the wreck, DPS says it's not clear yet if that was a factor in the wreck.
