CHANDLER -- Bashas' food stores said it plans to ask permission from a judge to close 14 underperforming stores as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

On July 12, the chain announced it had filed for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court citing the economy, pressure from a union and the national credit crisis.
Bashas President and Chief Operating Officer Mike Proulx said in a news release that the company needs to close some underperforming stores along with stores in newer areas that just didn't grow or develop.
The company is trying to transfer employees affected by the closings to another company location, according to Edward (Trey) Basha, a senior vice president and Basha family spokesman.
Bashas' wants to close 10 stores in metro Phoenix and one store each in Winslow, Tucson, Marana and Willcox.
The grocery stores slated for closure by Oct. 10 are:

Bashas' was founded more than 77 years ago by brothers Ike and Eddie Basha Sr. Since then, it has become the largest family-owned grocer in Arizona, and the 12th largest employer in the state.
Bashas' owns and operates more than 130 stores in Arizona, California and New Mexico.
