Major wind energy project planned near FlagstaffPosted: Updated:
FLAGSTAFF -- Generating power from the wind is something developers are proposing for a cattle ranch located in the Flagstaff-area.
Foresight Wind Energy wants to install 130 to 330 wind-driven turbines on the Flying M Ranch east of Mormon Lake.
Once the wind blows and the fans turn and power is generated, the company would then tie into federally owned power lines.
Before that can happen, developers must get approval from the federal government and clear numerous other regulatory hurdles.
The proposed project could cover 55 square miles, and if fully built-out, provide the equivalent of 500 megawatts of electricity.
If it's built, it would become the state's second major wind farm, following a large array covering about 15 miles of ranch land between Holbrook and Heber.
