Arizona AG says budget cuts force more layoffsPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard is making more layoffs because of state budget cuts.
Goddard says he has to lay off 29 employees to save $2 million as part of funding cuts required under the state budget for the fiscal year that began July 1.
The 29 layoffs announced Monday include 12 attorneys and 17 support staff.
Goddard's office laid off 20 people in January when the Legislature and Gov. Jan Brewer approved budget cuts in the last fiscal year.
Goddard says the two rounds of layoffs plus retirements and unfilled vacancies add up to a total of 82 positions.
He says he is trying to balance holding down costs against continuing to protect public safety and provide sound legal advice to state agencies.
