Pineiro does it all for Cardinals in 2-1 winPosted: Updated:
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Joel Pineiro hit a two-run double and gave up one run in seven innings, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday.
Pineiro entered the game with one RBI this season before lining the first pitch he saw from Arizona starter Yusmeiro Petit just inside third base to score Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina.
Manager Tony La Russa let Pineiro take the mound for the start of the eighth inning to give the crowd a chance to show its appreciation before pulling him.
Pineiro struck out three and allowed five hits in getting third win in five decisions after losing five straight and eight of nine. It also marked his first win since April that he didn't pitch a complete game.
The Diamondbacks scored their run in the fifth. Chad Tracy's ground-rule double down the left-field line scored Gerardo Parra from third and the Diamondbacks had runners on second and third with one out.
St. Louis took the series, two games to one.
Arizona will open a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies later today in Denver.
