Ariz. university leaders plan new campuses

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) -- Leaders of Arizona's three state universities are moving ahead with a plan to create more affordable higher education options as they face huge budget cuts and a call from the governor to boost the number of degrees.

Gov. Jan Brewer has said she wants the universities to double the number of bachelor's degrees they award by 2020.

The university presidents say they plan to open a fourth campus as soon as next year and four similar campuses by 2020. The location of the fourth campus will be announced in August.

The presidents agreed to work together to avoid duplicating efforts in establishing new programs. They also want to improve retention rates in current programs.

The presidents outlined their plan to the regents at a meeting Thursday in Flagstaff.
