Brewer signs bill on new Ariz. school tax creditsPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Gov. Jan Brewer has signed into law a bill creating new business tax credits for donations that will allow foster and disabled children to attend private schools.
Brewer signed the bill on Friday. It will take effect on Aug. 25, 90 days after Wednesday's end of a special session called by Brewer to act on the issue.
The tax credits will replace two small voucher programs ruled unconstitutional by the Arizona Supreme Court.
Supporters contend the tax credits will actually save the state money by taking students out of public schools.
Brewer did not respond to a reporter's question about why she insisted on a $5 million cap on the program.
