ASU, U of A men's golf teams qualify for NCAAPosted: Updated:
UNDATED (AP) -- The Arizona State and Arizona men's golf teams both have advanced to the NCAA Championships later this month in Ohio.
The Sun Devils secured their seventh straight NCAA championship appearance with a nine-stroke victory yesterday in the West Regional at Daly City, Calif.
ASU won with a team score of 36-under par.
The Sun Devils now have won four region titles (1995, 1999 and 2001) but they're seeking their first national title since 1996.
The UofA qualified for the NCAAs by virtue of its top-five finish in the Southeast Regional in Sorrento, Florida.
The Wildcats shot just 2-under as a team but finished in a three-way tie for second place yesterday at 23-under, which was 11 shots back of regional champion Central Florida.
The NCAA Championship is May 26-30 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
The finals have a new format this season, with the final eight teams after 54 holes facing off in match play to determine the national champion.
The individual winner will be crowned after 54 holes instead of 72 as in past years.
