Brewer picks Bennett as new secretary of statePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Secretary of State Jan Brewer on Friday announced that she's selected former Senate President Ken Bennett to fill her office once she becomes governor.
Brewer, a Republican, is expected to move into the governor's office once Democratic incumbent Janet Napolitano resigns after being confirmed by the U.S. Senate to become homeland security secretary. That's expected to happen later this month.
Bennett is a Prescott Republican who served eight years in the Legislature, including four as Senate president. He left office in January 2007.
Because he'll be appointed as secretary of state, Bennett would not be in the line of succession for governor. He has considered running for higher office before and is expected to run for a full term as secretary of state in 2010.
