Parents arrested for leaving child outside
SURPRISE - A nine-year-old girl is in the custody of Child Protective Services after a relative reported she had been abused by her parents.
Detectives arrested Gabriel Calzada, 34, and Betty Calzada, 37.
A relative tipped off the staff of Thompson Ranch Elementary School who then called police.
According to the family member the girl had missed school the day prior due to allegedly being locked out of her home and forced to sleep outside.
Surprise police said neighbors confirmed the child would be locked outside for unspecified amounts of time, sometime having water poured on her.
The stepmother admitted one time the child's finger was smashed by the sliding glass door.
The two were booked into jail on charges of child abuse and recklessly endangering a child.
The girl and her siblings are in Child Protective Services.
