4 In Congress request probe of Arpaio's policiesPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Four members of Congress are asking the U.S. Department of Justice to conduct a civil rights investigation of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
The four Democrats complained of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's immigration sweeps in heavily Hispanic areas of metropolitan Phoenix. They also asked Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to review the deal that gave special immigration powers to 160 of Arpaio's officers.
Arpaio said Friday his deputies didn't racially profile anyone in his series of sweeps and vows to change nothing in response to the investigation request.
The request for a Department of Justice investigation was made by U.S. Reps. John Conyers Jr. of Michigan, Jerrold Nadler of New York, Zoe Lofgren of California and Robert Scott of Virginia.
