Facing charges related to toddler's death
GILBERT -- A 22-year-old man was arrested for murder and child abuse after his girlfriend's baby died while in his care.
On Thursday, Gilbert police and fire departments responded to a report of an unconscious 1-year-old child at a home near Val Vista Drive and Warner roads.
Police say David Reed III was watching his girlfriend's daughter, Cheree Goard. Reed told officers that the child fell from a couch while he was out of the room for less than one minute.
The child died early Saturday morning.
According to the Gilbert Police Department, the evidence and autopsy revealed that the girl's injuries were not consistent with a fall from a couch.
The investigation revealed that the child suffered severe blunt force trauma to her head.
Reed was arrested and booked for one count of first-degree murder and one count of child abuse.
Reed is being held on a $500,000 cash bond.
