According to the Department of Public Safety, a car carrying three children and their parents was traveling eastbound on Loop 202 at Priest Drive when it hit the back of a pickup truck parked on the left side of the road.
The dad, who was driving, was distracted or looking somewhere other than the road and it appears he swerved into the emergency lane where the truck was parked, according to Mike Reichling with the Tempe Fire Department.
The car spun out, blocking some of the lanes and backing up traffic in the area.
Reichling said the kids and parents were properly restrained, which saved their lives.
All five were transported by ambulance to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
They are all listed in stable condition.
Reichling said the truck had pulled over due to a flat tire or some other sort of problem.
Tow trucks were called in to remove the vehicles from the road and the lanes were reopened shortly after noon.
The names and ages of the victims have not been released
