At least 6 cars burglarized by same suspect, police say

The following news release was sent by the Surprise Police Department:

SURPRISE - On Saturday, January 24, 2009, at approximately 10:00 pm, police responded to a report of a suspicious man entering vehicles in the Canyon Ridge West Community, Surprise AZ.

A resident called police to report that someone opened her garage door located at the 18400 block of North 114th Lane, Surprise AZ.The caller stated that when she went into her garage to investigate, she encountered a male subject who then fled on foot.The resident stated that the suspect had used the garage door opener from her vehicle which was in the driveway. Moments later, police received another call from a second resident who stated that a male subject was attempting to open car doors several blocks away.

Police contacted an individual matching the description, sitting in a vehicle at a home located at the 11400 block of West McCaslin Rose Lane.The subject, Kyle Holbert age 20, of Surprise AZ, was then taken into custody.After a brief investigation, it was discovered that Holbert had entered six unlocked vehicles in the neighborhood, taking miscellaneous items and money.

"We can't stop stressing the importance of locking your vehicles. Even something that seems as petty as someone scrounging for change from an unlocked car can become extremely dangerous once they have access to a garage door opener and your home" stated Sgt. Mark Ortega of the Surprise Police Department.Holbert was booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail for burglary and for an outstanding criminal arrest warrant.
