Lower enrollment allows district to give up leasesPosted: Updated:
TUCSON -- The slumping enrollment in Tucson's largest school district does have at least one upside -- it's giving the district empty space that it can put to good use.
Estimates on available space vary, but Tucson Unified School District officials peg the amount of unused space at about 1 million square feet.
Two years ago, the district had about a dozen leases on space to house staff and programs throughout the city because it didn't have enough room. But district officials expect to have no leases by the end of the fiscal year.
