Deputy standoff with suicidal man ends peacefully

UPDATE: At 4:16 pm, the subject exited his vehicle and was arrested by officers without incident.

PREVIOUS REPORT:

FLAGSTAFF - On 2/18/09 the Coconino County Sheriff's Office received a call from an anonymous person with the description of adult male who was suicidal.Officers from several Northern Arizona law enforcement agencies attempted to locate and contact the person.Based on the description of the vehicle, law enforcement officers located the adult male in his vehicle near the train tracks in the Winona area.He is believed to have a firearm.Officers are exercising caution to maintain public safety and find a peaceful resolution to the situation.

The general area is within the boundary of Cosnino and Spud roads (west to east) and Townsend-Winona and I-40 (south to north).Negotiators are trying to communicate with the subject.While the subject has not threatened officers or the public, residents in the immediate area were asked to evacuate by law enforcement officers as a precautionary measure.

Officers also are working with the Flagstaff Unified School District to provide safe school bus transportation from Cromer School to homes for children who live in the affected area.
