Police seize $30K during traffic stop in SurprisePosted: Updated:

SURPRISE, AZ. (Wednesday, February 18, 2009) On Friday, February 13, 2009, at approximately 5:00 pm, Surprise Police seized $30,900.00 during a traffic stop on US 60 and the 303 Loop in Surprise AZ. Surprise Police stopped the late model mini-van, driven by Luis Valenzuela, age 51, of Rio Rico, AZ for a traffic violation. After a records check, Valenzuela was subsequently arrested for driving on a suspended license.
During an inventory of Valenzuela's vehicle prior to an impound tow, Officer Steven Kerr, observed bundles of currency lying in the van in plain sight. The Officer located $30,900.00 in U.S. currency in wrapped bundles strewn throughout the vehicle. A police K-9 and handler from a neighboring agency were called in to provide a cursory exploration of the vehicle.
Valenzuela was booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail for driving on a suspended license. The Surprise Police Department is currently investigating this incident.
