Phoenix bicyclist killed in hit and runPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Phoenix police say a bicyclist was killed early Saturday after being hit by a vehicle whose driver left the scene and was later caught and booked on a manslaughter charge.
Sgt. Tommy Thompson says the 50-year-old man, Robert Flakes, was riding with a friend in south Phoenix at about 3:30 a.m. when he was hit from behind by a sport utility vehicle that left the scene.
The victim's companion called police, who spotted a vehicle minutes later fitting the description.
Police stopped the SUV and found damage consistent with the accident. They booked 33-year-old Max Ramiro Garcia into jail on manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident charges.
Thompson says alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the wreck. The victim's name hasn't been released.
