Ariz. lawmakers clear some university projectsPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Arizona legislators have cleared the way for the state university system to proceed with some construction and renovation projects, but only a portion of those authorized under the new state budget.
A legislative oversight committee reviewed a total of $65 million of projects, well short of the total $167 million of projects on university officials' to-do lists.
Lawmakers cited the state's fiscal crisis and said they applied strict health and safety criteria.
Projects that can proceed include ones involving roof replacements, elevator refurbishments, electrical upgrades and work on fire alarms and sprinklers.
Board of Regents officials boycotted the hearing Thursday, saying legislators are required to review all the projects.
