Boy hit, killed while riding bike with grandfatherPosted: Updated:
MESA - An 11-year-old boy was hit and killed while riding bikes with his grandfather in Mesa Thursday evening.
According to the Mesa Police Department, the boy was riding his bike on the sidewalk near Horne and Broadway Road about 5:30 p.m. when he entered the roadway directly into the path of a vehicle.
Sgt. Ed Wessing said the child was hit by a 1995 Chevy van driven by Jaime Onesimo Stirk-Beaven, 30.
Erick Chumacero Mendieta, a student at Lowell Elementary School, was transported to Maricopa County Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police say neither speed nor impairment were factors.
Wessing said no criminal violations or civil citations are being issued at this time.
