267 first-year teachers cut

GILBERT -- More than 400 Gilbert teachers will be out of a job come May.

On Tuesday night the Gilbert Public Schools board unanimously agreed to cut 267 first-year teachers in the district.

One hundred and thirty-nine other teachers were already told last week they would not be rehired unless the state's budget crisis is resolved.

The superintendant blamed state lawmakers for the crisis.

Hundreds of people showed up to at a meeting Tuesday night about the layoffs.

The laid-off teachers could be rehired, but it depends if the school board is able to find money from other parts of the district's budget and on next year's budget from the state.
