Truck with mechanical problems starts fire on I-17Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Interstate 17 is open in both directions after a brush fire forced a temporary closure north of Black Canyon City Wednesday afternoon.
Brush fire closes I-17 near Sunset Point - Interstate 17 is closed in both directions south of Cordes Junction due to a brush fire.
Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Harold Sanders said the closure was in the area of Mileposts 244 to 256.
According to the Daisy Mountain Fire Department, a truck with mechanical issues was off to the side of the road.
The truck reportedly had a blown-out tire and was overheating.
At some point, a brush fire started and the driver tried to put it out. He was burned and transported to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The fire burned approximately 150 acres.
Sanders said motorists need to be cautious and alert because there is still a good amount of smoke in the air that may affect visibility.
Also, there are still fire department and police units in the area attending to the burned spots along the east side of I-17 and in the median area.
Sanders said the Sunset Point Rest Area was closed and evacuated.
Red Cross units assisted motorists with water.
