19 Undocumented immigrants in custody after traffic stop

TEMPE -- The Department of Public Safety took 19 undocumented immigrants into custody after an early morning traffic near Interstate 10 and Elliot Road on Monday.

About 20 in custody

According to DPS, the van pulled over as instructed. After it stopped, however, the van backed up into the patrol car, possibly by accident. No injuries were reported.

Video from NewsChopper 3 showed the suspected undocumented immigrants sitting on the sidewalk next to the van on the side of the road.

All were identified as Mexican Nationals and believed to be in the country illegally. No women or children were in the group except for one minor, a 16- year-old male. They were turned over to ICE.

The driver was identified as Eracleo Martinez-Guzman, 33, of Mexico. The passenger was identified as Clemente Reteria-Lemus, 19, of Mexico. Both men were booked into the Maricopa County Jail on human smuggling charges.
