Deputy: Horse dragged behind pick-up by man, teen daughter

FLORENCE - A Florence man and his 13-year-old daughter have been arrested on animal cruelty charges after they were caught dragging a horse behind a pickup.

The Pinal County Sheriff's office says Monday's incident left the horse bloodied and scraped up, but the animal will apparently recover.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Vanessa White says in a statement that a caller reported a man dragging a horse tied to his truck with a chain on Monday. A sheriff's deputy followed drag marks on a dirt road until catching up with the truck.

The deputy saw Gordon Allen Bates and his 13-year-old daughter get out and start kicking and beating the animal. The deputy then arrested them both.

White says Bates told the deputy the horse wouldn't obey and needed to be moved to another area.
