Man collapses, dies while hiking on Camelback Mtn.

Another hiker tried to adminster CPR

PHOENIX - A man died while on Camelback Mountain on Thursday afternoon.

Police tell 3TV the man was hiking with his wife just after 1 p.m. in the Echo Park area of Camelback Mountain. The man collapsed while atop the mountain and went into cardiac arrest. Other hikers attempted to admister CPR but were not successful.

The man was on the south side of Echo Canyon about one-fourth of a mile from the top of the mountain. Due to the steep terrain, the man's body had to be airlifted in a basket.

The area of Echo Canyon was shut while authorities conducted their investigation but has since been re-openend.

Police have only said the victim is a 59-year-old man who was an out-of-state visitor. His family has told police the man was in excellent condition and an avid hiker. A physical examination of the body will be conducted.
