2 young men's bodies found in Colorado River
GRAND CANYON - The bodies of two young men were discovered in the Colorado River on Thursday afternoon in the Grand Canyon.
The first body was found by a private boating party and the second was found by a commercial river operator. Both parties notified authorities.
The bodies were transported by chopper to the South Rim before being taken to the Coconino County medical examiner.
The men have been identified as 16-year-old Saif Savaya and 22-year-old Joey Merrill. Mark Merrill, 16, also drowned after trying to swim across the river on April 30. His body was found on May 1.
The victims were part of a church group that had gone on a day hike. A two-day search was conducted after the young men were initially reported missing.
