Mesa woman survives boyfriend's murder-suicide attempt

PHOENIX (AP) - Mesa police say a man is dead after shooting his girlfriend, who survived, and then himself in an attempted murder-suicide.

Police spokesman Esteban Flores said Sunday that the female victim is expected to recover after undergoing surgery for two gunshot wounds.

According to Flores, officers were called early Saturday after the victim managed to call 911 from a home near US-60 and Gilbert Road.

Officers found the victim conscious and alert but pronounced the boyfriend dead.

Investigators say it appears the man shot her before turning the gun on himself.

Police did not release the name of the suspect, who was in his early 30s.
