TEMPE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) - All the hype about Apple's smartwatch began last September when it was announced that the futuristic watch will be launched.

"You can bet that Apple is going to have a profound impact on the smartwatch category," said Ken Colburn, a technology expert with Data Doctors.

Although he expects the smartwatch to be a big hit, he doesn't anticipate seeing the long lines that Apple products attracted in the past.

“I don't expect to see the kind of immediate fervor that we saw with the iPhone and iPad," Colburn said. "One, because it's a very expensive timepiece. And it's not a standalone device, it's an extension of your phone."

More details about the smartwatch will be released on Monday, but this is what we know so far. The least expensive model could start at a $350. There will be three product types: the Apple Watch, the Apple Watch Sport and the Apple Watch Edition, a higher-end option that could cost thousands of dollars. And although the technology will be pricey, the concept has been around for years.

The 1960s Dick Tracy cartoon series foreshadowed what the future just might look like for watches. Well, that future is here. Now, consumers just want to know what to expect when it's launched.

"Everyone needs to understand we're in the very early stages of this wearable technology revolution that's going on, it's just, we're at the very, very beginning," Colburn said.

The Apple Watch will come with features like a fitness tracker and Apple Pay. Still, as cool and new as it is, Colburn said you might want to take a wait-and-see approach when it's released.

"For most people, kind of laying back and seeing what happens, waiting for the next generation, seeing maybe some price drops and those kinds of things, make a lot of sense," Colburn said.
