Boy critically injured after jumping from moving school bus in Tolleson

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - A 10-year-old boy was critically injured after reportedly jumping from a moving school bus Thursday morning.

Phoenix firefighters and police officers responded to a call of an injured child at approximately 8:30 a.m. in the area of 91st Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road.

Phoenix police Lt. Matt Giordano said the boy was being transported to school and was the only student on the bus when he exited the rear door.

Giordano said the child was injured when he hit the ground and no other vehicle was involved in the collision.

The driver and an assistant provided medical care until emergency personnel arrived.

Capt. Benjamin Santillan with the Phoenix Fire Department said the boy suffered a significant head injury and was in extremely critical condition when he was transported to Phoenix Children's Hospital.

Phoenix police detectives are investigating the incident.
