PHOENIX (CBS5) -

One man was wounded during a shootout in the parking lot of a Phoenix Walmart on Thursday night after he tried to help a friend, police said.

His friend, a 24-year-old woman, and a 25-year-old man had been involved in some sort of altercation and were driving separate cars when the suspect rammed the woman's SUV, Phoenix police Sgt. Vince Lewis said.

The woman called her friend and he agreed to meet her in the Walmart parking lot at 75th Avenue and McDowell Road, Lewis said.

The suspect followed the woman to the lot and after her friend arrived opened fire on the woman's black SUV, Lewis said.

The 29-year-old friend of the woman returned fire, but was wounded in the exchange, Lewis said.

The woman was not hurt, police said, and her friend was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police were still looking for the suspect Friday morning.

Lewis said anyone with information is asked to call police at 602-262-6141 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS (480-948-6377), or 480-TESTIGO (480-837-8446).

No other information was available.
