A Phoenix police officer opened fire on a man who allegedly threw knives at him.
The shooting happened shortly after 7 a.m. Thursday at a brand-new warehouse industrial complex in the area of 2400 W. Union Hills Dr.
It started with a 911 call from a construction worker who said a man, now identified as Joshua G. Dawson, threw rocks at him while he was in his vehicle.
According to police, Dawson, 35, repeatedly punched the squad car of the first officer to arrive on the scene.
When the second officer showed up, Dawson began throwing knives at him. That officer shot and wounded Dawson. He was taken to a hospital where he later died, Howard said.
Neither one of the officers was injured.
Howard said the knives Dawson had are designed for throwing.
This was the 43rd officer-involved shooting in the Valley in 2014. Nine other officer-involved shootings have happened near the Valley.
