Phoenix Mercury to host community and Media Events leading up to Playoffs

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The Phoenix Mercury will host a number of events this week as anticipation builds for the First Round of the 2014 WNBA Playoffs. Mercury playoff festivities will tip-off with a CityScape Mercury blitz on Tuesday, August 19, and culminate with a viewing party for Game 2, Round 1 vs. Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday, August 24 at US Airways Center. 

In addition to a variety of fan events throughout the week, the Phoenix Mercury will "sign" an honorary assistant coach on Thursday, August 20 who will provide additional motivation and inspire the team throughout the club's 2014 playoff run.

Tuesday, August 19:

Mercury Blitz at CityScape

CityScape (Central Ave.)

12 – 1p.m.

Mercury entertainers will create a party-like atmosphere at CityScape in downtown Phoenix. Fans are invited to stop by and join the fun as well as enter to win a variety of prizes.

Wednesday, August 20:

Fry's Fan Rally

Fry's Food Store

Phoenix, AZ 85032

8-10 a.m.

Mercury entertainers will paint the car windows of fans in attendance and give away a variety of prizes, including a pair of courtside seats to Round 1, Game 1 on Friday, August 22.

Thursday, August 21:

Honorary Assistant Coach Press Conference (Open to Media only)

US Airways Center, Al McCoy Media Center

201 E. Jefferson St.

Phoenix, AZ 85004

1 p.m.

The Phoenix Mercury will "sign" 11-year old Mia McPoland as an honorary assistant coach, a position she will hold throughout the team's 2014 playoff run.  Mia suffers from Diamond Blackfan Anemia, a rare bone marrow failure syndrome which causes her body not to produce red blood cells.

Friday, August 22:

"Be the Match" Bone Marrow Donor Registry Drive

US Airways Center, Casino Arizona Pavilion

201 E. Jefferson St.

Phoenix, AZ 85004

11 a.m.– 1 p.m. & 4 – 7 p.m. 

The Phoenix Mercury will host a Be the Match bone marrow donor registry drive in an effort to educate fans and Valley residents about becoming a bone marrow donor to help children like Mia. Fans can be tested at the drive and sign up to become a donor.

Fans are invited to join Mercury VP Ann Meyers Drysdale, Scorch and members of the Hip Hop Squad to watch as the team battles for a road win in the second game of the first round of the WNBA playoffs.
