Interior secretary visiting Arizona urban park

Posted: Updated:

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell is visiting Arizona this morning as her department highlights a federal program that has developed more urban parks and outdoor recreation opportunities across the country.

Jewell is scheduled to tour South Mountain Park in Phoenix on Saturday with U.S. Rep. Ed Pastor and Mayor Greg Stanton.

Phoenix is the last stop in a series of visits Jewell has been making around the country this week in support of the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund.

Officials say South Mountain Park is the largest municipal park in the U.S. and considered a "model urban park.'

Jewell was in New Mexico on Friday to announce the completion of the Southwest's first urban national wildlife refuge.

She is pushing for Congress to permanently fund the conservation program.
