SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A Phoenix dermatologist is opening her doors this week and offering free skin cancer screenings to anyone who makes an appointment.

Dr. Helen Ross said she is quick to tell her patients even if they have been very protective for years, the damage may already have been done.

"Most people get most of their damage from sun exposure when they are kids or younger adults, and it can take years, even decades for skin cancer to manifest," Ross said.

The free screenings also include a multi-layered digital scan of damage to your face but you need to have thick skin to handle what the computer spits out.

When it comes to skin damage, knowledge is power and timing is everything. Melanoma is a voracious killer but catching it early makes all the difference.

"I think that every person needs an annual exam whether they have a history of skin cancer or not, even if it's just for peace of mind," Ross said.

The free screening takes place at Shapiro Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Skin Klinic at 5410 N. Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale, and is offered from Tuesday through Friday this week. Look for Suite F-100.

To set up an appointment, call 480-451-1700.
