PHOENIX (CBS5) -

An Arizona Department of Public Safety officer was hospitalized in serious condition after he crashed his cruiser on a rain-slickened road south of Payson on Monday night.

Officer Anasuma Dukuly was enroute to a medical emergency call on State Route 87 about four miles south of Payson when he crashed in the rain, DPS Officer Carrick Cook said.

He was flown to John C. Lincoln-North Hospital with a serious head injury described as substantial, Cook said.

"(The) officer was wearing his seatbelt which saved his life," Cook tweeted Tuesday afternoon.

The crash was still under investigation, Cook said.
