Democrats want special session on school funding

Posted: Updated:

Democrats in the Arizona House want Republican Gov. Jan Brewer to call a special session of the Legislature to allocate $317 million that a judge ordered the state to pay to schools.

House Minority Whip Eric Meyer says the money is needed now so schools can hire more teachers and cut class sizes before the new school year begins.

A judge last week ordered the state to pay an inflation boost voters required as part of a 2000 measure that increased sales taxes. The Legislature and Brewer stopped funding the annual increases during the recession.

Senate President Andy Biggs has said he's waiting until a final order from the judge. Brewer's spokesman said Monday that no special session is immediately planned.
