GCU's Yates Selected Capital One Academic All-AmericanPosted: Updated:
Canyon University senior Jessica
Yates has been named to the Capital One Academic All-American
Track/Cross Country team, as selected by the College Sports Information
Directors of American (CoSIDA). Yates, who becomes the third Antelope athlete
to earn Academic All-American accolades at the Division I level, was selected
to the third team of the release.
"I am very proud and thrilled for Jessica to receive such a prestigious award!" said head coach Tom Flood. "It is wonderful to see that her hard work and performances, both on the track and in the classroom, have been recognized."
Yates turned in an impressive resume in both the classroom and on the track during her time in a GCU uniform, as the Snohomish, Wash., native finished her master's of business administration with a 3.85 GPA. In addition to her academic success, Yates also took home a first-place finish at the WAC Outdoor Championships in the triple jump, recording a season best leap of 12.40 meters. She tallied a second in the high jump, tying her own school record of 1.68 meters, and also picked up a seventh in the long jump.
At the indoor championships in March, Yates recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the high jump and triple jump. The Washington State transfer exits Canyon as the school record holder in the indoor and outdoor high jump.
Yates' efforts in 2014 helped the women's track and field team to a Western Athletic Conference title at the indoor championships and runner-up finish at the outdoor championships in Orem, Utah.
"Jessica has had an incredible career here at GCU and is a wonderful example of a true student-athlete," added Flood.
