David Michael Carr was sentenced to prison Thursday for the 2011 death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter. He will spend 15 years and 1 day behind bars.

Carr was sentenced in the same Elmore County courtroom where he pleaded guilty to Judge Sibley Reynolds just over a month earlier.

He was accused of striking the little girl in the head at a home off Deatsville Highway in 2011. Authorities responded to the home on reports that the child was having seizures, but medical professionals at two hospitals, Baptist South and Children's Hospital in Birmingham, strongly suspected child abuse.

The child, identified as Sarah Lowery, later died and her cause of death was ruled as the result of blunt force trauma to the head.

Carr originally faced a murder charged, which includes the intent to kill, but because admitted to the reckless behavior that led to Lowery's death, the court downgraded the charge to manslauther.
