East Valley authorities are trying to determine what caused the death of a naked Gilbert man who fought with his wife and police officers, investigators said.

It took five officers and several stun gun deployments to subdue Daniel Best, 34, of Gilbert,  Saturday at about 3:30 a.m. in the courtyard of a complex at 1333 W. Guadalupe, according to Gilbert police Lt. John Lyle.

Shortly after he was taken into custody, Best started showing signs of significant medical distress, Lyle said.

The Gilbert Fire Department took him to Banner Desert Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Sunday.

Lyle said a preliminary investigation revealed Best was involved in a domestic altercation with his wife, which led callers to request the police response.

"We believe impairment by cocaine is a factor in the behavior encountered by responding officers," Lyle said in a news release.

The Maricopa County medical examiner will conduct an investigation into the cause of death.
