Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has ordered state flags to be lowered to half-staff Thursday in recognition of fallen peace officers.
President Barack Obama officially proclaimed May 11 through May 17 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week.
"Every May 15, we pay tribute to the brave men and women who have laid down their lives in service to our communities and our country," Brewer said in a statement.
"As we honor the fallen, let us also remember their families and loved ones left behind, as well as all Arizonans and Americans who devote and risk their lives to protect and serve us," she added.
Brewer is asking flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Thursday.
"I encourage all Arizonans to join in this tribute," she said.
