A suspect in an attempted robbery of an armored car died after he was shot by one of the guards in Phoenix.
The man who was fatally wounded has been identified as 34-year-old Lonnie D. Smith.
The armored car was at a Wells Fargo Bank at 742 E. Glendale Ave. to load money into the ATM about 9:45 a.m. on Friday, April 25, when two suspects approached, said Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos.
A guard in the truck got out and opened fire, hitting one of the suspects, Martos said.
Martos said they were still searching for the second suspect and it wasn't known if the second suspect was hit, Martos said.
The second suspect was described as black, 25 to 30 years old, 5'11" tall, 180 pounds and wearing baggy pants, a gray shirt and baseball cap.
Police were searching in the area between Seventh and 12th streets and Glendale and Maryland avenues.
Witnesses said they heard gunshots and went outside and saw the wounded suspect on the ground.
Smith was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
