PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A father's telephone conversation with his son turned out to be his last Thursday afternoon.
Phoenix police found his 22-year-old son shot to death in a north Phoenix apartment complex, Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos said.
The victim has been identified as Christopher J. Winston.
The father called police about 1:30 p.m. and said he was on the phone with his 22-year-old son when he heard a "scuffle," Martos said. He said several attempts to call his son back failed.
Officers then went to the gated Copper Palms Apartments on Cave Creek Road just north of Cactus Road, and police said they found the victim in one of the units, Martos said.
An 18-year-old man who lived at the apartment and is considered an investigative lead told police he was with a friend when the 22-year-old came into the apartment with a gun and demanded items of value, Martos said. The 18-year-old said he struggled with the victim before the fatal shots were fired.
Martos said the 18-year-old also suffered an injury during the fight, was questioned and released from police custody. The woman at the apartment was also questioned and released, Martos said.
Martos said the investigation was continuing and would be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for possible charges.
The victim's identity was being withheld pending notification of all family members.
