Diaper bank aims to collect 3 million diapers a yearPosted: Updated:
What started as a 14-year diaper drive recently became the Diaper Bank of Central Arizona.
But the goal is still the same: to collect as many diapers as possible for needy families in the Phoenix area.
"I thought, we are the fifth largest city in the United States and we don't have a diaper bank. It's time to have a diaper bank in phoenix," said Ginger Clayton, who runs the Diaper Bank of Central Arizona.
Clayton had been involved in collecting diapers for needy families for years when she realized that no matter how many she collected, there was always a need for more.
"There's no governmental funding. Food stamps and programs such as WIC do not cover diapers," she added.
The Diaper Bank houses mounds and mounds of diapers in an area tucked inside the moving and cable company business that Clayton operates.
"So far we've collected about half a million diapers and our goal is 1 million annually right now," she said.
The diapers are collected through drives at businesses, schools and churches and are given to nearly 30 nonprofit agencies around the Valley that need about 2 million diapers a year.
"They're usually domestic violence shelters, housing programs and even foster agencies, we help them as well ... this allows them to free up their monies that they can spend on diapers to be able to use on case management helping these families get back on their feet, and that's what's so important."
Though Clayton and her group of volunteers don't disperse the diapers directly to the families, the agency workers who do make sure Clayton knows what a difference the Diaper Bank makes.
"Some of them even have tears in their eyes because they know how much the diapers mean to their families," Clayton said about the volunteers.
Clayton would eventually like to collect 3 million diapers a year, which she's getting help with thanks to a Huggies grant of a quarter of a million diapers for two years.
