Pair of records fall at UTEP InvitationalPosted: Updated:
The Grand Canyon University men's and women's track and field teams traveled east to El, Paso, Tex., for the one-day UTEP Invitational Saturday. The meet, which was held at Kidd Field on the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso, featured eight teams in addition to the host Miners.
Tyler Vandyke set a new school record in the 1500-meter run, crossing the line in a time of 3:59.26, which was good enough for third in the race. Brandon Kocmoud, the previous record holder in the 1500-meter run, finished fifth with a time of 4:04.74.
Jahliell Wiltshire took home a fourth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles after posting a time of 14.63 seconds. Teammate LeSean Marks was able to garner sixth in the race, clocking a time of 14.95.Wiltshire's time improves on his previous WAC-best time of 14.67 seconds.
Josh Ralston finished fifth in the 400-meter dash, recording a time of 47.78 seconds. Ralston's time is the second-best in the conference this season in the quarter mile.
Lance Parker took seventh in the 100-meter dash, posting a time of 10.63 seconds. Parker then went on to take third in the 200-meter dash, finishing with a time of 21.41 seconds. Parker holds the top marks in the conference in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash.
The quartet of Niels Theijs, Cody Bidlow, Marcus Flannigan, and Parker took third in the 4x100-meter relay team, putting together a time of 41.12 seconds.
In the men's field events, Daniel Zupeuc placed second in the pole vault with a height of 5.10 meters. Cody Smith took third with a vault of 4.55 meters. Zupeuc's mark ties him for the highest in the conference this spring.
Michael Bolligar's height of 1.90 meters in the high jump was the second-highest mark posted on Saturday.
AAron Hill recorded the second-best leap in the conference in the long jump, flying out to a distance of 7.08 meters.
Horizontal jumpers Akintunde Adeyemi (14.69 meters) and Robert Matthew (14.13 meters) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the triple jump. Adeyemi and Matthew hold the top two spots in the WAC in the event, respectively.
On the track for the Canyon women, Moya McKenzie raced to a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash. McKenzie, who has had a stellar 2014 campaign in the quarter mile, posted a time of 53.86 seconds in the race. The sprinter improved on her previous conference-best mark of 53.88 seconds.
Samantha Bogatz, who holds the fourth-fastest time in the WAC in the 100-meter dash, took second in the race on Saturday, finishing with a time of 11.83 seconds. Bogatz clocked a time of 24.48 seconds in the 200-meter dash which was the sixth-fastest in the sprint.
Amanda Sims (1:03.78) collected a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles and teammate Dionna Mercer (1:08.86) took eighth in the same event.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Shavine Hodges, Jennifer Dowty, Kevina Godfrey, and Bogatz ran a conference-best time of 45.95 seconds in the relay.
In the field events, the Canyon women dominated the pole vault, as Jennifer Rolph led the way, recording a second-place finish and WAC-best vault of 4.00 meters. Amy Hop (3.90 meters) and Lauren Graham (3.80 meters) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Vanessa Levy captured a second-place finish in the hammer throw, recording a toss of 49.69 meters. Levy recorded her second silver finish of the day in the discus throw, posting a heave of 47.95 meters. Levy picked up her third second-place finish of the day in the shot put, tallying a distance of 13.78 meters. Levy's distance breaks her previous school record in the shot put. Fellow thrower, Nyomi Mosley, took sixth in the discus throw with a mark of 42.89 meters.
Andrea Olstead jumped to a distance of 5.56 meters in the long jump, placing her fourth in the event. Olstead's mark is the second-best tallied this spring in the conference.
Jessica Yates tied her season-best in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.64 meters on her way to taking seventh in the event. Yates also took sixth in the javelin throw (33.53 meters) and seventh in the long jump (5.48 meters).
The Lopes will head west next weekend for the second of their four meets during the outdoor season in California. Athletes qualifying to participate in the Mt. SAC Relays will be in action next Friday and Saturday in Walnut, Calif., with the rest of the athletes competing at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif.
