Glendale parents in custody after 3 kids found living in filthPosted: Updated:
Three children were in the care of Child Protective Services and their parents are in police custody after they were found living among rotting trash and other deplorable conditions in a feces-smeared Glendale house, police said.
Officers uncovered the shocking living conditions while investigating a neighbor's report of a possible family fight in the area of 71st and Glendale avenues about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, a Glendale police officer said.
Carolyn Walker, 23, walked out of the house to speak with officers, immediately shutting the door behind her, but not before an officer said he noticed what appeared to mud or tomato sauces smeared on the tile and flies circulating around full trash bags, the officer said.
The officer said there was a distinct odor of fecal matter, urine and rotting food coming from the home.
Walker admitted she and Victor Alan Adams, 30, had been arguing, and that he had left the home and that her three children, ages 2, 4 and 5 years old, were inside, the officer said.
Walker became visibly nervous when the officer told her that investigating the report meant entering the home to ensure no one was injured inside. She then confessed Adams was still in the home with the children in the master bedroom.
Officers called for Adams, but received no response. They later found him hiding under a pile of dirty laundry on the floor of the master bedroom closet, the officer said.
Officers found the floors smeared with mud, tomato sauce, human and dog feces and numerous soiled diapers, the officer said.
As many as 10 trash bags filled with food and trash were scattered throughout the home and the toilet in the master bedroom bathroom was unflushed and so brown with feces, the white porcelain could not be seen.
The officer said the home's refrigerators contained nothing that appeared edible, save for a lone frozen chicken breast package in the freezer.
Walker and Adams were taken into custody on suspicion of child abuse and neglect, and the children were taken by Child Protective Services after a walkthrough of the home.
The couple have a history with CPS and been investigated in May and October of 2012 and January 2013 for similar conditions.
