Healthcare enrollment deadline MondayPosted: Updated:
March 31 is the deadline to enroll in health care.
The web site ran into a few technical problems Monday morning, shutting it down for about four hours.
A lot of people around the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry were also trying to sign up for insurance coverage.
At the J.C Lewis Primary Health Care Center they enrolled people online, over the phone and with paper applications, and they say the tech gliches have not slowed them in any way. They've just a lot of people showing up before the deadline.
People have until midnight on Monday to sign up. Open enrollment began Oct. 31.
More than 1,700 people have utilized the navigation specialists at both the J.C Lewis and Curtis v. Cooper Centers to enroll.
While the deadline to enroll ends Monday, the certified navigators at the J.C. Lewis Center said as long as you have started the enrollment process by Monday, you have met the deadline, but you have to complete the entire process before your coverage can kick in.
"Going online, on the phone or paper applications, that's just the initial part," said Frank Vanellison, one of the certified navigators at the J.C. Lewis Center. "You still have to finish strong and make your payment. Once you do that, you'll have your coverage."
If you miss the deadline, you could be facing a penalty. The amount will differ based on your family's household makeup, but it will show up on next years taxes.
There will be an extension for those who can prove that they tried to sign up but for some reason couldn't complete the process.
Vanellison said that extension date has not been set yet.
